Itinerary
Two thousand years ago, Herculaneum was the best choice for a nobleman looking for a peaceful and enchanting place to enjoy a holiday at the foot of Mount Vesuvius.
With its sumptuous villas that overlooked the sea, terraces and gardens with colourful flowers where to read a book and seek solace from the busy winter, it boasted an elegant theatre for live performance, a big gymnasium surrounded by marble columns, magnificent bath houses and bronze statues.
Herculaneum was a delight. Today you can visit what is left of the well-preserved site: original wooden doors, beds, windows and other furniture in the private houses or shops, amazing mosaics and frescoes and the skeletons of the victims found on the beach together with a boat and other daily life objects, still intact after such a tragedy.
Herculaneum is the place where everything has been frozen in time by the fury of the volcano in 79 a. D.
